House Ball is a 11 meter high sculpture of the sculptor Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen in the Berlin district of Mitte . It is located on Bethlehemkirchplatz in front of the Philip-Johnson-Haus in direct proximity to Friedrichstrasse , on which the former Bohemian Bethlehem Church stood from 1737 to 1963 .

sculpture

The sculpture is roughly spherical and depicts a household tied in a bundle and contains various furniture and other objects. It is kept in brightly colored colors and can be stylistically assigned to the Pop Art typical of Oldenburg . It was set up on August 3, 1997 and funded by Ronald S. Lauder , the main investor in the nearby Checkpoint Charlie business center .

Houseball symbolically represents the household of an exile and refers directly to the relief "Bohemian immigrants" on the monument of Friedrich Wilhelm I in Berlin-Neukölln and the bundle that is carried there by a woman. At the same time it symbolizes the idea of tolerance of the Prussian ruling house and the suffering of the evangelical exiles from Bohemia , who were expelled from their homeland in 1737 because of their faith and who settled in Bohemian-Rixdorf (today Neukölln) with the permission of Friedrich Wilhelm I.

Bethlehem Church Square

Immediately in front of the house ball is the paving stone floor plan of the former Bohemian Bethlehem Church, which was built as the central church of the Rixdorf Bohemians in Berlin in 1737 and demolished in 1963 due to severe war damage.
