In 1897 the museum inventory had grown so large that a new larger building was required on 17th Street and New York Avenue. The new museum building was designed by Ernest Flagg in Beaux Arts architecture . After financial difficulties, the National Gallery of Art took over the collection in 2014 . The educational program was taken over by George Washington University and continued there as the Corcoran School of Art and Design . After renovation work, the building of the previous Corcoran Gallery of Art is to be used primarily for educational purposes.
