Astronomical Society of India

The Astronomical Society of India (ASI , Indian Society of Astronomy ) is a society of professional astronomers and other professionals in related disciplines.

The company was founded in 1972. Vainu Bappu was the first president. In 2010 about 1000 scientists were members of the Society.

The administrative seat is in the astronomical faculty of the Osmania University in Hyderabad .

The main task is to promote astronomy and related disciplines. The ASI organizes events and tries to promote awareness of astronomy through the Bulletin of the Astronomical Society of India .

The current president is Rajaram Nityananda of the National Center for Radio Astronomy at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Ganeshkhind, Pune .

The ASI awards several awards, the most important and recognized of which is the Prof. MK Vainu Bappu Gold Medal , which goes to young researchers around the world who have made extraordinary contributions to astronomy and astrophysics . The awardees include Y. Fukui (1986), Pawan Kumar (1992) and Brian P. Schmidt (2002).

The society also runs two prestigious lectures: the Modali Endowment Lecture and the RC Gupta Endowment Lecture.
