Lawrence Weiner (born February 10, 1942 in the Bronx , New York ; lives in Amsterdam and New York ) is an American visual artist . Alongside Sol LeWitt , Robert Barry , Douglas Huebler and Joseph Kosuth , Weiner is considered to be a representative of conceptual art that emerged from minimalism in the 1960s .

Youth and education

Weiner was born in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City . He only briefly attended Hunter College in New York after graduating from high school before turning to the arts.

Works

Weiner's early work included experimentation with shaped canvases and squares cut out of carpets. Since 1960 he has been presented in solo exhibitions. 1968 after previously LeWitt in his Paragraphs on Conceptual Art had formulated Weiner created his Declaration of Intent :

  1. The artist can make the work. ( The artist may construct the piece )
  2. The work can be made. ( The piece may be fabricated )
  3. The work need not be carried out. ( The piece need not be built )
Every possibility is equivalent and corresponds to the intention of the artist, the decision on the execution lies with the recipient at the time of receipt. ( Each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist the decision as to condition rests with the receiver upon the occasion of receivership )

Weiner's first book “Statements”, published in 1968 (published by the Louis Kellner Foundation and Seth Siegelaub ), a 64-page paperback in which he described several projects, is considered to be one of the most important works of conceptual art of this time. In the same year he was involved in the Xeroxbook , also edited by Seth Siegelaub, and in 1969/1970 in “ When attitudes become form ” by Harald Szeemann in the Kunsthalle Bern .

Wall installations have been Weiner's preferred medium since the early 1970s . In addition, he deals with video art , film art , books , audio recordings , performances , posters, multiples, graphics and various other forms of presentation of his text works, which he understands as sculptures.

In 2007 Weiner took part in the Personal Structures Time-Space-Existence symposium , a project initiated by the artist Rene Rietmeyer .
