Edward Ruscha

Edward "Ed" Joseph Ruscha (pronounced Ruschee , born December 16, 1937 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American painter , graphic artist , photographer and filmmaker . He was best known for his works in the field of painting and printmaking.

Life

He attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1956 and had his first solo exhibition in 1963 at Walter Hopps' Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles.

As early as 1962, he published photo books in editions of 400 to 2000 copies. For Ruscha u. a. American photographer Walker Evans was a role model. There are parallel tendencies at Robert Frank , successors are Bernd and Hilla Becher .

He was made famous in Germany in 1975 by the gallery owner Rolf Ricke and the gallery owner Ursula Wevers, who worked with him.

Private life

Ruscha was married to Danna Knege from 1962 to 1972. They separated and remarried in 1987. He has two children, Edward "Eddie" Ruscha Jr. and Sonny Bjornson. In the late 1970s he bought land near Pioneertown ( California ), where he later built his house.

Awards

In 2001 Ruscha was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters , in 2004 an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In addition to a large number of national and international awards, Ed Ruscha from Germany received the German Society for Photography (DGPh) culture award on September 2, 2006 at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. In 2014 Edward Ruscha was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .
