Ana Hatherly

Ana Hatherly (born May 8, 1929 in Porto , Portugal ; † August 5, 2015 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese writer, painter, artist, filmmaker, philologist and university lecturer.

She is considered to be an important representative of experimental poetry in Portugal and was best known as a poet, essayist , Germanist and Hispanicist .

Live and act

Ana Hatherly studied German at the University of Lisbon and did her doctorate in Hispanic studies at Berkeley University in California (USA). In 1958 her first book was published, a volume of poetry, which was followed by numerous other books, including twenty volumes of poetry or poetry alone. With this and some performances , she advanced to one of the outstanding figures of experimental poetry in Portugal in the 1960s and 1970s, especially in the Movimento da Poesia Experimental (Po-Ex).

She worked as a university teacher until the mid-1990s and became the founder and first president of the Instituto de Estudos Portugueses at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 1994 , where she also worked as a professor. In 1980 and 1981 she was editor-in-chief of the literary magazine Loreto 13 . She was also head of the Portuguese PEN Club between 1992 and 1994 .

Her artistic work includes around two hundred works of painting and collages . It was shown at the art biennials in Venice and São Paulo and can be seen mainly in the Museu Serralves in Porto and Museu do Chiado in Lisbon.

She was primarily a filmmaker in the 1970s when she worked at the London Film School. During this time four experimental short films were made.

Your literary work or parts of it have also been translated into German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Japanese. The book “ Tisanas ” was published in German in 1999 by Edition Transavia, Berlin.

In 2003 the documentary “A mão inteligente” was shot about her.

She was a member of the Hispanic Society of America and lived in Lisbon.

Ana Hatherley died of natural causes in Lisbon in August 2015 at the age of 86.
