Gilberto Zorio (born September 21, 1944 in Andorno Micca ) is an Italian sculptor , performance and installation artist and an important representative of the Italian Arte Povera .

life and work

Gilberto Zorio studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti Turin from 1963 to 1970 and began exhibiting his work as early as the 1960s as part of the Italian Arte Povera movement. He had his first solo exhibitions in 1963 in the Piccola Galleria d'Arte Moderna and in 1967 in the Galleria Sperone in Turin.

Gilberto Zorio's subtle forms and sculptural installations often consist of raw materials , in keeping with Arte Povera . He creates room installations from a wide variety of materials, such as wood, iron, terracotta , rubber, glass or objects such as athletics spears and, quite often, intense light sources . The aim of his art is to make mental and physical energies visible through tension . Human energies are also included in his art. Zorio tries to create installations that can absorb and store energies and then release them again. The defining characteristics of his work are strength , movement and growth.

In 1972 Gilberto Zorio took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Individual Mythologies : Processes section and was also represented at Documenta IX in 1992 with the installation “ Pugno fluorescente ” (made of phosphorescent wax and 2 lamps) . In 1978, 1980, 1986 and 1997 he participated in the Venice Biennale . In 2010 the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma showed a solo exhibition of his work.

Zorio lives in Turin .
