Roland Nachtigäller (2008)

Roland Nachtigäller (* 1960 in Dortmund ) is a German art historian and exhibition organizer . Since the beginning of 2009 he has been the artistic director of the Marta Herford Museum (with an extended contract until 2023).

Live and act

Roland Nachtigäller studied art, visual communication, German studies and media education at the Kassel Art College (then Kassel University of Applied Sciences ). After an academic assistant at the newly founded Kunsthalle Fridericianum (Kassel) , he was appointed to the management team of documenta IX in 1991. Then he was involved in numerous projects at home and abroad as a freelance exhibition maker and author.

From 2003 to 2008 he was director of the Städtische Galerie Nordhorn , which he attracted national attention with an internationally oriented exhibition program on contemporary art. He developed various projects on art in public spaces. Between 1998 and 2000 he conceived the sculpture project kunstwegen in the German-Dutch border area together with Martin Köttering . In 2008 he founded its continuation under the title "raumsichten". Nachtigäller was invited as a consultant by the Art Commission for Art in Public Spaces of the State Capital Dresden in 2010. In 2011 he was a member of the jury for the national freedom and unity monument in Leipzig.

Nachtigäller is the successor to Jan Hoet , the founding director of Marta Herford . Here he is responsible for a program with themed exhibitions on contemporary art, design and architecture. These are supplemented by retrospectives for Martin Walde and Olav Christopher Jenssen, for example . The majority of the exhibitions are in-house productions. In 2011 he and his team were awarded the Justus Beer Prize for Curators for the exhibition “We are all astronauts - Richard Buckminster Fuller's universe in the mirror of contemporary art”. In 2014 Marta Herford was named Museum of the Year by AICA, the international association of critics . In autumn 2010 he also realized Dennis Oppenheim's two “Safety Cones” on a Herford crossroads as part of the Marta project “Five Goals / Five Places” .

When he took office in Herford, Nachtigäller announced that he wanted to show that “the periphery is at least as exciting as the big metropolises.” Innovations arise “solely from an artistically shaped social context”, everything else is “technocracy, commerce and intellectual death”; Lack of culture means social “downfall” and “spiritual impoverishment”, according to Nachtigäller.

Roland Nachtigäller lives in Herford .
