life and work

Martin Walde studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , Austria (with Wolfgang Hollegha , Max Weiler , Arnulf Rainer ). Walde lives and works in Vienna. In 2017 he received the Austrian Art Prize for Fine Arts .

Walde creates his works from unusual materials such as glass, silicone , gelatinous or sticky substances, styrofoam , hair, fragrances or plasma light . He uses a wide variety of media; in addition to objects and installations , he also repeatedly works with drawings and picture stories.

Research, experiment and childish instinct to play are of particular importance in Waldes work: On the one hand, they serve to discover and develop new materials and approaches; on the other hand, they are to be understood as social instructions and aids to understanding, because in Waldes works interaction and participation of the audience are always desired. In doing so, no instructions are deliberately given about objects or installations; rather, dealing with the given must be discovered and developed by the audience themselves. Because works of art are not closed exhibition or museum objects for Walde, his process-like works always remain incomplete and changeable due to public intervention and the nature of the material. In order to create this openness and transformability at the material level, Walde uses flexible, plastic and unstable materials that are often difficult to bring into a predetermined shape. Rather, the behavior of the materials themselves become part of his installations and a form-giving element.
