Evangelical Brotherhood of St. George's Order
The Evangelical Brotherhood of St. George's Order (Erfurt) is a Protestant religious order in Germany.
history
The brotherhood was founded in 1987 on the Danish island of Falster . Most of the founding members came from the former GDR and had emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany or had come to the Federal Republic in the course of the ransom of political prisoners. Some of the founding members knew each other from the youth work of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mecklenburg. The motive for founding the order was the impression of the later members that political statements in everyday West German church life had “primarily left-liberal to left-wing extremist connotations.” With reunification, the order was realigned, and the order moved from Hohenkirchen in Mecklenburg first to Berlin and later to Thuringia. The order has been based in the Georgenburse in Erfurt since 2010 .
The brotherhood consists of members in graduated degrees of attachment (medals, medals) and a broad circle of friends (guest brothers) who live throughout Germany. The church-authorized link between the brotherhood and the regional church acts - in the form of the Grand Commander - Oberkirchenrat Thomas A. Seidel . Since December 20, 2010 the Evangelical Brotherhood of St. George's Order has been included in the list of spiritual communities of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). On December 7th, 2013 she received the license to practice medicine as a recognized spiritual community from the regional church council of the Evangelical Church of Central Germany (EKM). The number of members is given for 2014 with about 20 people.
activity
In 2002 the first panel discussion (so-called Neudietendorfer discussion; since 2007 Erfurt discussion) took place, which from then on once or twice a year framed the intellectual and missionary work of the order. The work is supplemented by publicly accessible conventions and conferences. The regional church of Mecklenburg (until the move to Thuringia) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia recognized the order and supported it financially.
The order also publishes theological and contemporary political writings. Selected events were supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation .
