Georgenburse

The Georgenburse was a student bureau in the old town of Erfurt . In the Middle Ages it served as a residence for students and teachers at the University of Erfurt , and Martin Luther lived there between 1501 and 1505 . The Georgenburse was located at the southern end of the Lehmannsbrücke on Breitstrom , the only building still preserved today is privately owned and serves as an educational and meeting place.

Historical

The Georgenburse was first mentioned in a document in 1456, its architectural history goes back to the 14th century. It served as a residence for students and teachers at the University of Erfurt and was subject to a master's degree . The Burse had a permanently employed cook, and the other administrative tasks were taken over by students. Because of the declining number of students, the Georgenburse was sold by the city of Erfurt in the 16th century. The original complex consisted of several buildings; the front buildings on Augustinerstrasse were destroyed in a bomb attack in February 1945. The only remaining building was restored in 1983. After extensive renovation, the educational and meeting center "Georgenburse Erfurt - Study Place of Luther's Time" opened on October 31, 2010, next to it there is a pilgrims' hostel on the top floor. The house still houses the center of the Evangelical St. George Brotherhood .
