The arms of the Breitstrom behind the Krämerbrücke
The Breitstrom at the Schlösserbrücke

The Breitstrom is an arm of the Gera in the old town of Erfurt .

course

The Breitstrom arises shortly after the Long Bridge in the center of Erfurt from the confluence of the Bergstrom and Walkstrom . The Breitstrom flows past the Neue Mühle under the Schlösserbrücke , under the Rathausbrücke , under the Krämerbrücke and under the Lehmannsbrücke . It also branches into a few separate arms, but all of them run close to each other. In Venice in the north of the old town, the river arm called Wilde Gera , coming from the east, used to flow into the Breitstrom, from which the Gera again arises. The Wilde Gera has been filled in since 1898. To the north of Erfurt's old town, the river is again referred to as Gera.

Islands

Between the arms of the Breitstrom there are several islands in Erfurt's old town, some of which are also built up:

  • Peninsula on the Fischersand: before the Walk- and Bergstrom merge to form the Breitstrom, they already flow about 500 meters parallel to each other between the Brunnenkirche in the west and the Schlösserbrücke in the east. They flow around the narrow peninsula of around two hectares. In the west it is built up (Straße Fischersand), while it is undeveloped and tree-lined to the east of the Long Bridge.
  • Insel am Junkersand: The only 550 square meter island below the Schlösserbrücke is also lined with trees and serves the city ducks as a retreat that is safe from dogs, cats and other predators.
  • Insel am Dämmchen: This island stretches from the Rathausbrücke to the Lehmannsbrücke and has been built on since the Middle Ages. The Krämerbrücke leads over it and a few other small footbridges form several entrances to the island, which used to be mainly built with mills. After reunification, it was redesigned and has since formed a small green area with walking paths. The island is around 300 meters long and has an area of around 0.9 hectares.
  • Island in Venice : In Venice in the north of the old town there is another island. It was also designed as a park area with walking paths. There are also two residential buildings on the approximately 0.7 hectare island.
