Originally built next to a ford as a wooden footbridge over the Gera, the lock bridge was first mentioned in the 13th century as a long footbridge between the lock mill and the new mill .

The construction of the first stone bridge followed after the town fire of 1736. However, this was a mixed construction, consisting of two vaults on both banks and a three-span wooden bridge in between. During a renovation in 1862, the middle part was replaced by three more stone vaults and the bridge was expanded to 10 m wide. The bridge axis was buckled.

During the Second World War , the neighboring buildings, such as the Neue Mühle and the Reibstein department store, were destroyed by an air raid on November 26, 1944, and the Schlösserbrücke was badly damaged. The lock mill, which had been inoperative since 1937, was demolished in 1944 as a precautionary measure because of its flammability in fear of fire bomb attacks. As part of the repair work on the Schlösserbrücke, the structure was rebuilt by 1949. This included straightening and widening on both sides to 18.4 m, for which the building line of the Neue Mühle was withdrawn. Concrete was used to lengthen the vaults . In addition, the previously seven-span bridge was shortened by demolishing a vault and moving the eastern bank wall accordingly.

Due to damage to the old natural stone vaults, four arches were finally replaced by concrete vaults in 1965 and the two western vaults at the Neue Mühle were demolished and filled. Since then, the Schlösserbrücke has four water-carrying passages, three of which are visible on the south side and one is covered by the Neue Mühle. The two filled openings can also be seen under the current.

construction

The 43.7 m long arch bridge is now a concrete structure clad with limestone blocks. It consists of six vaults with clear widths from 3.7 m to 4.8 m and a vault cut from 0.9 m to 1.0 m. The width of the vault is 18.25 m, the apex and spur are between 40 cm and 50 cm thick.
