Lorenz Gedon (born November 24, 1844 in Munich ; † December 27, 1883 ibid) was a German sculptor , architect , interior designer and craftsman .

education

In 1858 Gedon started his apprenticeship with the sculptor Joseph Otto Entres . The main focus was on medieval sculpture. In 1863 he entered Max Widnmann's class at the Munich Art Academy . There he won the Academy Award in 1868 for his sculpture "Ritter Georg".

activity

Gedon's main focus was on the arts and crafts. He was an important representative of the neo-renaissance style in applied arts, sculpture and architecture, in some works he worked neo-baroque . For example, in 1878 he furnished the German Salon of the World Exhibition in Paris. His interiors were found in the Lenbachhaus , in the Munich Schackgalerie and in the Kunstgewerbeverein Munich (1877), in the Palais Todesco in Vienna (construction period 1861–1864), in the Villa Wahnfried in Bayreuth (construction period 1873–1874), in Detmold Castle (1882 ) and in the Museum of the City of Worms (1881), the secularized Pauluskirche that he had converted . Gedon was involved in the decoration of the Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee palaces of the Bavarian King Ludwig II . He also designed buildings for private individuals such as the factory owners' villa Schloss Abtsee on the Abtsdorfer See .

He was married to Wilhelmine (called Mine) Böheim (1849–1929), who was the model for the painter Wilhelm Leibl (pregnant) for the portrait of Frau Gedon (1869), one of the masterpieces of German portraiture and the first picture with Leibl in Munich, and especially Paris, had great success; it hangs in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.

Artist friendships connected him with Franz von Lenbach , Friedrich August von Kaulbach and Wilhelm Busch , who wrote a lyrical obituary for him. In 1873 he founded the Munich artist society " Allotria " together with Franz von Lenbach . The reason for this was the departure of around 50 artists from the Munich artists' cooperative.

The tomb Gedons is on the old southern cemetery in Munich (Wall Links Course at 356 burial ground 15) location .

Awards

In 1897 the city of Munich honored him by naming Gedonstraße in the Schwabing district , and on April 27, 1936, the city of Berlin by naming Gedonstraße in the Reinickendorf district .
