At the age of 16 Seitz came to Nuremberg in 1845 and became a pupil of the engraver Friedrich Wagner. On his recommendation, Seitz later attended the art school in Nuremberg and was there a. a. taught by the painters Albert Christoph Reindel and August von Kreling . Influenced by this, Seitz preferred genre painting and found his subjects mainly in the everyday life of the "little people".

In 1850 Seitz settled in Munich as an assistant to the painter Gisbert Flüggen . Seitz soon found a connection to the Munich school through the art academy and soon found himself on the same level as colleagues such as Wilhelm von Diez or Karl von Piloty .

In 1876 Seitz was accepted as an honorary member of the Munich Art Academy. At that time he was already the undisputed first small painter at the Munich school.

Anton Seitz died in Munich on November 27, 1900 at the age of 71.

Anton Seitz's artistic work is characterized by a slight interplay of light and shadow. Seitz is also still known today for the sometimes humorous way he depicts it.

In his honor, his hometown Roth named the Anton-Seitz-Schule (secondary school, since 2010 secondary school) on March 31, 2001 .
