Schlösserstrasse (Erfurt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Castle Road is one of the main shopping streets of the Thuringian state capital Erfurt .

It is about 500 meters long and connects the fish market in the northwest with the Anger in the southeast.

history

The Schlösserstraße was first mentioned as slohzergahze in a document from 1350, but it is likely to be much older as it was part of the Via Regia . This crossed the Gera on today's Schlösserbrücke , which was still called Erphes in the early Middle Ages and thus gave its name to the city of Erfurt. The ford in question is located in the area of today's Schlösserbrücke. In 1826 the Schlössergasse was renamed Schlösserstraße. Between 1946 and 1990 it was called Hermann-Jahn-Straße after Hermann Jahn and since then it was called Schlösserstraße again. The name is most likely derived from the guild of locksmiths who lived on this street in the Middle Ages.

Development

The Breuninger department store at night

The lock bridge over the Breitstrom , an arm of the Gera, is located roughly in the middle of the street. The part between Anger and Brücke is characterized by stately houses from the Wilhelminian era , which create the feeling of a house canyon here in Schlösserstraße .

The first houses at the beginning of the Schlösserstraße towards the Anger were destroyed in air raids during the Second World War. Only then did the street become a square where the “Angereck” was built in the 1970s, and around 2000 a controversial, modern new building.

On the other side of the Gera between the Schlösserbrücke and Fischmarkt there are older, smaller houses that make the street look a bit wider here. Most of them date from the early modern period .

Sights in Schlösserstraße are the Lorenzkirche near the Anger and the Neue Mühle at the Schlösserbrücke.

Today's meaning

Since 1990 the Schlösserstraße has turned more and more into a shopping street. The two new department stores Breuninger and C&A were built on the site of the bomb holes , as well as Müller and numerous smaller shops and cafes. Schlösserstraße is classified as a pedestrian zone and is used by numerous light rail lines that run between the Anger and Fischmarkt / Rathaus stops .
