history

Vredendal (German: 'Friedenstal') as a farm probably got its name after a clash in 1668 between cattle robbers and farmers. Cattle were stolen from Bakleiplaas farm and peace was restored to what is now the city.

The urban settlement was created in 1933 in connection with the construction of an irrigation system for the farms in the area. The place only received its city status in 1963.
