The Venice is a park-like area in the Thuringian capital Erfurt . It forms the north-eastern boundary of the Andreasviertel . The 300 meter long and up to 105 meter wide area is characterized by the Gera , which branches out several times and forms some islands. As the main Gera arm there, the Breitstrom merges into the Wilde Gera in Venice ; in addition, the narrow Gera splits off from him . The park stretches between Gera in the west, Pfeiffersgasse in the northeast, Steinstrasse in the east and Strasse Venice in the south.

Today this park is located where the inner fortifications of the city used to cross the Gera. In the 16th century there were up to seven water mills in the area of the park , but now they have all been dismantled or redesigned. In 1666 the dyer's house Zur kleine Venedige on the Breitstrominsel was first mentioned and in 1826 this island was first referred to as Venice in a city map . The origin of the name is based on the one hand on the Old High German word Fenn , or the Rhenish word veen , which denotes a swamp or a boggy valley. With dige in the second part of the word stands the Middle Low German equivalent for waxing, flourishing or swelling. However, it is more natural to establish a connection with the Italian city of Venice , with which Erfurt had trade relations for many centuries. From 1998 the areas were gradually redesigned by the garden and cemetery authority in Erfurt and completed in 2004 with two new bridges, wide green spaces and footpaths and cycle paths.
