The main cemetery in Erfurt is a park-like burial place in Erfurt and the largest cemetery in the state of Thuringia .

The plant was planned from 1907 and opened in 1916 in the west of the city. It has been connected to the city center by a tram line since 1934 and a crematorium since 1977 . The cemetery now covers an area of ​​about 57 hectares.

An ideas competition was initiated in 1912 for its design. As a result, there were two award-winning winners, the garden architect Hennings from Hanover and the architect Paul Meißner from Darmstadt.

War cemeteries :

  • Ehrenhain I: for those killed in the First World War. Created in 1914, redesigned in 1975/76. The memorial dates from 1946 (Prof. Brockert). In 2009 all gravestones were re-labeled.
  • Ehrenhain II: occupied in the war years 1939 to 1945. 784 victims ( bomb victims , soldiers) were buried here. The memorial dates from 1958, it was erected in place of a wooden high cross. The granite crosses with the names of the victims date from 1994.
  • Ehrenhain III-MEMENTO: for bomb victims and war returnees. Current design from 1996. 137 grave crosses with 748 names remind of the victims. MEMENTO lettering by Helmut Braun 1952.
  • Hamburg block: for bomb victims from Hamburg and Berlin who died in Erfurt and for those returning from the war: 154 victims.
  • The main cemetery includes the Soviet cemetery of honor for 604 Soviet forced laborers, soldiers and civilians.
  • French grove of honor for victims from both world wars, with a memorial from 1954. 13 graves were destroyed in an air raid on February 20, 1944, 90 victims were exhumed in 1948 and brought to France.
