Johannes Biereye (born June 10, 1860 in Brücken (Helme) , Province of Saxony , † January 19, 1949 in Erfurt ) was a German historian and educator.

Life

Johannes Biereye grew up in Brücken (Helme) and attended the Royal High School in Erfurt . He then studied ancient languages ​​and history at the University of Halle , where he did his doctorate on a topic of ancient history.

He became a high school teacher and got his first job in Niesky in Upper Lusatia . In 1901 he moved back to Roßleben near his home , where he became a teacher at the Roßleben monastery school . A few years later he came to the Royal High School in Erfurt . There he began the continuation of the " History of the City of Erfurt " left behind as a fragment by Carl Beyer . In 1908 he became director of the grammar school. In the same year the academy of non-profit science in Erfurt elected him as its vice president.

After the First World War, Biereye helped found the Erfurt adult education center in 1919 and became chairman of the Erfurt History and Classical Society . In 1925 he was elected chairman of the library society and in 1930 president of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt as the successor to Friedrich Wilhelm Prince of Prussia , who died in 1925 . He held this office until 1945.

He died on January 19, 1949 at the age of 88 in Erfurt. His “History of the City of Erfurt” remained unfinished.
