The Steigerwald , colloquially also known for short (the) Steiger , is around 8 km² in size and at a maximum of 347.9  m above sea level. NHN high forest area in the urban area of Erfurt in Thuringia and belongs to the northwest edge of the Ilm-Saale-Platte .

Surname

The forest area, which used to be much more extensive in all directions, was called the Wawet or "Wawit" in the Middle Ages . The name "Wawithe" was first mentioned in documents in 1196, later Waweyd, Wanwid, Wanwed and Wawet, in 1456 Wagweide and finally Wagd. The nine villages located on the southern edge of the forest at that time all had the nickname "an der Wagd", today still Bechstedt-Wagd . The name is probably due to the Old High German wacwitu (wac = standing water, witu = wood) and means "swamp wood". A. Kirchhoff provides a different interpretation: Wagweide corresponds to "Wages Apartment" or "Wages Hain", Wage was then a Germanic deity, perhaps corresponding to the Wodan .

Only with the emergence of the steep driveway from the area of the later rifle house to the Waldschlösschen in the direction of Arnstadt did the name Steiger come into use. Initially the road (= "the steep path") was meant, then the hill, the neighboring and finally the entire forest area: Steigerwald. Old High German: stigan = to rise, Middle High German stig or steige, the steep ascent.

geography

location

The Steigerwald, which prevents the city center from expanding towards the south, lies between these districts of Erfurt: Löbervorstadt in the north, Daberstedt in the northeast, Wiesenhügel in the east, Egstedt and Waltersleben in the south and the districts of Rhoda , Bischleben and Hochheim in the valley of the river Gera in the southwest to the west.

Surveys

Its highest point is the Stunzelberg at 347.9  m . Further elevations are the Kahlplatte ( 341.4  m ) further west , the Schindleichsberg (approx.  280  m ) south of the Löbervorstadt and the White Mountain (approx.  257  m ) east of Hochheim.

description

The Steigerwald is designated as a landscape protection area (LSG) and FFH area and consists primarily of beeches and oaks . At the edge of the forest, which is criss-crossed by numerous hiking trails, there are some barracks, such as the Steigerkaserne or the Löberfeld barracks . The forest area is cut through in a north-south direction by federal highway 4 , on which the Hubertus excursion restaurant and the former Waldschlösschen are located. In the northeast part of the forest is the Erfurt Bismarck Tower .

The Prussian Lieutenant General August von Hedemann (1850–1862 commander of the Erfurt Fortress), together with Friedrich Adolph Haage and the Erfurt Beautification Association , had the promenade paths that open up the Steigerwald . A memorial with a bench in the Steigerwald on Hedemann-Weg commemorates Hedemann. A plaque attached to it bears the inscription: "In memory of the creator of the promenade paths in Steiger August von Hedemann 1785-1859". The memorial was built in 1934 for Haage, whose medallion was seized by the Haage family after the war. The original (no longer existing) memorial for Hedemann was on the opposite (western) side of the path through the Hopfengrund. The current memorial plaque for Hedemann was created on a private initiative and was attached to the actual Haage memorial in 1994 in the presence of a descendant of the general. She is currently (2018) defaced ("Fuck"). Efforts are being made to add a plaque for Haage to the memorial.

The Steigerwaldstadion , the home of Rot-Weiß Erfurt , and the Steigerstrasse to the north are named after the Steigerwald in Erfurt .

In the Steigerwald there are several natural monuments , burial mounds from prehistory and other objects from bygone times such as the Steigerkreuz .

On the edge of the Steigerwald, Tannenwäldchen 26, not far from the Bismarck Tower, the Luther Park has been located since 1917 .
