Friedrich Adolph Haage
Friedrich Adolph Haage (born March 24, 1796 in Erfurt , † September 20, 1866 in Erfurt) was a German gardener and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Haage ".
Live and act
Friedrich Adolph Martin Haage was the son of Johann Nikolaus Haage and Catharina Barbara Nehrlich. He received his gardening training from Johann Heinrich Seidel (1744–1815), court gardener of King Friedrich August II of Saxony . After the years of traveling that followed his apprenticeship , he returned to Erfurt. Here he acquired a small piece of land and in 1822 founded a commercial and seed nursery under the name Friedrich Adolph Haage junior. The first seed directory from his nursery appeared in 1824. It is now considered lost.
Haage not only developed a feeling for new, promising plant introductions, but also made use of the technical possibilities of his time. He is one of the first German commercial gardeners to use newspaper advertisements as an advertising medium. He developed a special passion for cacti , collected and propagated them and soon owned one of the largest cacti collections of his time.
Haage was a co-founder of the Erfurt Horticultural Association and later became its honorary director. He made a contribution to the Steigerwald in Erfurt . Together with August von Hedemann , he had paths built in the forest area in order to make it accessible to the citizens of Erfurt. As a thank you, the “Erfurt Beautification Association” erected a memorial there for him after his death. In 1934 this monument was rebuilt in the Steigerwald. It was dismantled at a time that is no longer known after the war, and the rescued medallion with the portrait of the honored is now on the wall of the Haage company in Erfurt.
The von Haage collection was visited by his contemporaries such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Franz Liszt and by brothers Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt . The gardening entrepreneur Ernst Benary began his training with him in 1835 and remained an employee in his company until 1842.
