The Haage-zinnia ( Zinnia haageana ) is a plant of the genus Zinnia ( Zinnia ) in the family of Compositae (Asteraceae). The specific epithet honors the Erfurt gardener and plant breeder Friedrich Adolph Haage (1796–1866).

features

The Haage zinnia is an annual plant that reaches heights of 30 to 45 centimeters. The leaves are narrowly lanceolate , measure 2 to 3.5 × 0.5 to 0.7 centimeters, are about five times as long as wide, sessile or short, with broad stems and ciliate bristles on the edge . The 8 to 9 ray-flowers are broadly ovate, suddenly contracted at the base, golden yellow or orange in color (varieties also brown-red or two-colored). The chaff leaves are longer than the disc flowers , with entire margins and orange in color, with a dark red tip. The shell is flat, bowl-shaped. The bracts are broadly ovate, green in color and darkly spotted above. The fruits have 2 unequal awns. The awn of the middle fruit is 3 to 5 millimeters long.

Flowering time is from July to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Systematics and distribution

Zinnia haageana is widespread in the Mexican highlands on grassy rocky hills, damp meadows and in ruderal locations at altitudes of 1500 to 2000 meters. It was first described in 1861 by Eduard August von Regel .

use

The Haage zinnia is widely used as an ornamental plant for summer flower beds and borders and as a cut flower. It has been in culture since 1862 at the latest. There are some varieties, some of which are half-filled.
