Mammillaria haageana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German gardener and botanist Friedrich Adolph Haage from Erfurt.

Mammillaria haageana usually grows individually, sometimes sprouting with age. The spherical to short cylindrical, glaucous-green colored shoots are up to 15 centimeters high and 4 to 11 centimeters in diameter. The crowded warts are small, square at the base and without milky sap . The axillae are slightly woolly. The 1 to 4  central spines , usually two very slender, are black to reddish, straight to slightly curved. They become 0.6 to 1 centimeter long. The 18 to 30 radial spines are smooth, white, radiating and bristle-like. They are 3 to 6 millimeters long.

The deep purple to rose red or pink carmine colored flowers are up to 1 centimeter long and 1 to 2.2 centimeters in diameter. The fruits are red. They contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria haageana is widespread in the Mexican states of Veracruz , Puebla , Mexico , Morelos , Oaxaca, and Mexico City .

It was first described in 1836 by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer .

Craig (1945), Mammillaria elegans var. Haageana (Pfeiff.) Krainz (1967), Mammillaria elegans var. Longicaudata Repp. (1987) Mammillaria elegans var. Lupina Repp. (1987) and Mammillaria elegans var. Teyuca Repp. (1987).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria haageana subsp. acultzingensis (T.Linzen, Rogoz. & F.Wolf) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1994 as Mammillaria acultzingensis by Thomas Linzen, Helmut Rogozinski and F. Wolf. David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria haageana . The subspecies always grows individually. The individual plant bodies are larger than 10 centimeters in diameter. The flowers are deep carmine red.
  • Mammillaria haageana subsp. conspicua (JAPurpus) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1912 as Mammillaria conspicua by Josef Anton Purpus . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria haageana . The subspecies usually grows individually. The plant bodies are 10 to 11 centimeters in diameter.
  • Mammillaria haageana subsp. elegans (DC) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1828 as Mammillaria elegans by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria haageana . The subspecies always grows individually. The plant bodies are 5 to 8 centimeters in diameter. The flowers are pink.
  • Mammillaria haageana subsp. haageana :
    The nominate form sometimes forms groups. The plant bodies are between 5 and 10 centimeters in diameter. The flowers are deep magenta to light pink.
  • Mammillaria haageana subsp. san-angelensis (Sánchez-Mej.) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1981 as Mammillaria sanangelensis by Hernándo Sánchez-Mejorada (1926–1988). David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria haageana . The subspecies usually grows individually. The plant bodies are 4 to 7 centimeters in diameter. The flowers are pink to carmine red.
  • Mammillaria haageana subsp. schmollii (RTCraig) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1945 as Mammillaria elegans var. schmollii by Robert T. Craig . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria haageana . The subspecies has slimmer bodies with reddish to black thorns.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
