Wolfgang Hollegha is considered one of the most important abstract painters in Austria. On the occasion of an exhibition in the St. Stephan Gallery (1959), the charm of his works was described by one of his most important promoters, Monsignor Otto Mauer , as “Mozart-like”, “that is: sublime without being pontifical”. His works can be found in many private collections as well as in museums around the world (e.g. Albertina , Vienna; Museum für Moderne Kunst Stiftung Ludwig , Vienna; Museum of Art, Portland, Oregon; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh).
“As long as I look at things, they are alive. If I were to stubbornly draw it now, it would suddenly be dead, so I see that my body, the way I move my hand, the shift in gravity that you can feel, that all of this remains in the drawing . The spontaneity of the body plays a role. I don't paint geometrically because you don't see things geometrically. I have always started from nature, from what I see. My basic tendency is to escape geometry. "
