Life
Prachensky is born the son of the architect and painter Wilhelm Nicolaus Prachensky . His mother Henriette Hnidy comes from an Austro-Hungarian officer family. His cousin was the Innsbruck architect Hubert Prachensky . After graduating from high school, he moved to Vienna in 1952 and began studying architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (with a diploma). From 1953 he also studied painting there.
In 1956, together with Wolfgang Hollegha , Josef Mikl and Arnulf Rainer , Prachensky founded the artist group "Galerie next St. Stephan", which gathered around the Viennese priest Otto Mauer , the cathedral preacher to St. Stephan . In 1957 the group was presented in an extensive exhibition at the Vienna Secession . Prachensky becomes their member. From 1983 until his retirement in 2000 he held a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and was director of the master school for painting. Prachensky is considered one of the most important representatives of the Austrian avant-garde and Informel in Austria.
Most recently he lived and worked in Vienna . His grave of honor is at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 33 G).
