The Essl Museum is a museum building in the Weidling district in the municipality of Klosterneuburg near Vienna in the Tulln district in Lower Austria . The museum , which opened on November 5, 1999 and closed on June 30, 2016, still contains parts of the Essl collection in the art depot .

history

The married couple Agnes Essl and Karlheinz Essl senior built up the Essl collection over decades , in addition to the Schömer and Baumax companies . From 1987, with the opening of the Schömer-Haus administration building in Weidling, built with architect Heinz Tesar , the Essls showed parts of the collection in the central hall of the building, organized individual presentations for painters such as Arnulf Rainer and Hermann Nitsch, and held evenings with new music led by Karlheinz Essl junior . After parts of the Essl Collection had been shown worldwide on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs as cultural ambassadors, the Essls made the Austrian state an offer in 1990 to include their collection in the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, including the collection in a gallery in the so-called book tower, a matter which was broken up by strong opposition to the book tower. As a result, a separate exhibition house with a central art depot was built with the architect Heinz Tesar.

EXHIBITIONS CLOSED!

The exhibition at the Essl Museum closed on July 1, 2016. The Essl Collection was given to the Albertina (Vienna) on permanent loan .

architecture

The museum is located in a chaotic industrial area on an inconspicuous access road between the tracks of the S-Bahn with the Klosterneuburg-Weidling stop and the Danube .

The museum's floor plan forms a right-angled triangle, the hypotenuse of which runs parallel to the railway line and whose acute angle is directed towards Klosterneuburg Abbey . The shortest side of the facade contains the entrance wing.
