Otto Mauer (born February 14, 1907 in Brunn am Gebirge ; † October 3, 1973 in Vienna ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest, art collector and patron. He ran an avant-garde gallery in Vienna.

life and work

In his youth, Mauer was involved in the Neuland Federation , and in 1931 he was ordained a priest. During the Nazi era , Otto Mauer was arrested several times and banned from preaching. He was protected by Cardinal Innitzer and Prelate Karl Rudolf . From 1946 Otto Mauer was clergyman assistant to the Catholic Action. In 1954 he became cathedral preacher in St. Stephan , and he founded the famous gallery next to St. Stephan in Grünangergasse . Soon after it was founded, the gallery next to St. Stephan became the center of Austrian Informel ( Maria Lassnig , Oswald Oberhuber ). In 1965, Cardinal König founded the Pro Oriente foundation fund , Otto Mauer was a member of the board.

For the Galerie next St. Stephan Otto Mauer collected 3,000 works from classical modernism to informal painting (including works by Alfred Kubin , Hans Fronius , Herbert Boeckl , Arnulf Rainer , Josef Mikl , Wolfgang Hollegha , Markus Prachensky , Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Christian Ludwig Attersee ). The Otto Mauer Collection is now part of the collections of the Cathedral Museum in Vienna .

The Otto Mauer Prize has been awarded annually to young artists since 1981 . It is considered one of the most important awards for fine arts in Austria. The prize money comes from the Otto Mauer Fund, which was set up in 1980 as a foundation by the Archdiocese of Vienna .

Arnulf Rainer judges Mauer: “Otto Mauer was certainly a fighter for the church and contemporary art. It actually met with very strong rejection in the church, although it was not fought against, it was only tolerated. ... Otto Mauer had an influence and he was convincing. "
