Karl Rudolf (born November 22, 1886 in Vienna ; † August 21, 1964 there ) was a Catholic theologian , cathedral chapter , prelate and founder of the Austrian Pastoral Institute.

Live and act

Karl Rudolf was born in Vienna on November 22nd, 1886 into a family from Bohemia. In 1902 he entered the Marian Congregation . From 1908 to 1912 he studied Catholic theology and was ordained a priest in 1912 by Archbishop Franz Xaver Cardinal Nagl . During this time the Viennese pastoral theologian Professor Heinrich Swoboda decisively shaped his thinking.

After a year as a cooperator in Bruck an der Leitha , he came to the Vienna seminary as prefect of studies . He received his doctorate in theology in 1918 with his thesis “The Secret Revelation of John”, and since 1919 he was the first academic pastor of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The end of 1918 was founded the Christian-German Student Association (CDSB) at his suggestion in Vienna to the social need to alleviate the student and religious education to obtain a compulsory subject. The Young Austria Association emerged from the CDSB. From this, Rudolf and Michael Pflieger founded the Neuland Federation . In 1921 Rudolf initiated the Akademikerhilfe, also to support students in precarious social circumstances. In 1922 he was appointed to the Cathedral Curate at St. Stephen's Cathedral (then to the Vienna Cathedral Chapter in 1941 ). In the 1920s, Rudolf basically dealt with pastoral topics. Together with Pius Parsch and Anton Bauer, he edited the supplement “Der Seelsorger” of the Wiener Diözesanblatt, which still exists today as an independent magazine “Diakonia” .

After a long planning phase, Rudolf became head of the newly established Viennese pastoral care institute in 1931. The Christmas pastoral conferences - today the Austrian Pastoral Conferences - were particularly effective. After all Catholic organizations were banned in 1938, the institute was converted into the pastoral office of the Archbishop's Ordinariate. Karl Rudolf has published a monograph on the activities of the pastoral care office during the Nazi era , which is an important testimony to the Catholic Church during the war . During this time he tried to activate Catholics in their commitment to society and the church. One of the focal points was the advanced training program for laypeople. At his request, Margarete Schmid founded the “Theological Lay Year” , which continues to this day as theological courses . After 1945, Karl Rudolf remained head of the pastoral office (today the pastoral office of the Archdiocese of Vienna). The pastoral institute was also rebuilt under his leadership as an Austria-wide pastoral institute.

Karl Rudolf died in Vienna on August 21, 1964 as a result of a stroke.
