Diakonia - International Journal for the Practice of the Church is a specialist pastoral publication. It emerged from a merger of the two formerly independent magazines Der Seelsorger and Diakonia .

history

The Pastor: Monthly magazine for contemporary homiletics, liturgical movement and pastoral practice was founded in Vienna in 1925 and was published by the Herder publishing house - published by the Vienna Pastoral Institute. Banned by the National Socialists in 1938 , the magazine could be published again in 1945 with the new subtitle monthly magazine for all areas of priestly work in the Kingdom of God . The editing was now with Karl Rudolf , the then head of the Viennese pastoral office. In 1965, the subtitle changed again in connection with a conceptual reorientation to a two-month publication for the practice and theory of church service .

ANIMA. The quarterly magazine for practical theology was founded in 1945 by the pastoral theologian Franz Xaver von Hornstein , who was also the editor for a long time. The publisher was the Pastoral Care Institute of the University of Friborg / Switzerland . ANIMA was first published by Walter Verlag in Olten , Switzerland , then from 1966 by the joint publisher Walter and Grünewald and from 1968 exclusively by Matthias Grünewald Verlag. 1966 was also the year the magazine was renamed. From the 21st volume the publication was entitled Diakonia .

The pastor and Diakonia merged in 1970. The joint product of the Herder and Grünewald publishers was now called Diakonia / Der Seelsorger - International Journal for Practical Theology . Diakonia has had its current title since 1972. Since 2006, Herder has been the sole owner of the magazine.

Diakonia has been appearing at the Philosophical-Theological University of Vallendar since February 2014 under the editorship of Doris Nauer , who holds the chair there for pastoral theology and diaconal theology .

program

In terms of program, the editorial team is committed to the Second Vatican Council . Diakonia wants to show how the mission of Jesus' message can be pastorally implemented and lived in view of the current social challenges.

The journal endeavors to bring science and practice as well as theology and other sciences into conversation with one another and thus to contribute to the further development of pastoral practice. The exchange between theologians who work at the university and those in church practice is promoted, as is the transfer of experience among practitioners.

The articles in the magazine cover everything related to the practice of the Church in its various fields. In each case, scientific principles as well as concrete experiences are introduced. By making the social aspect of pastoral issues explicit, the contextuality of church life is taken into account.

Four issues have been published annually since 2011, each devoted to a specific topic. Further individual contributions on current and fundamental pastoral questions and discussions as well as reviews and a gloss on current pastoral and church events complete the content. The magazine is aimed primarily at all those who are active in the specific practice of the church, i.e. all full-time and voluntary workers, priests and lay people . Diakonia is based on pastoral practice in the Catholic Church, but includes ecumenical issues and also allows non-Catholic authors to have their say.

The editorial team includes: Doris Nauer (editor-in-chief), Thomas Brose , Hanno Heil, Franziskus von Heereman, Birgit Marx, Martin W. Ramb, Joachim Schmiedl , Klaus Vellguth and Holger Zaborowski .
