Franz Xaver von Hornstein
Franz Xaver von Hornstein (born June 4, 1892 in Pruntrut ; † June 30, 1980 in Basel ) was a Swiss Catholic clergyman, pastoral theologian and university professor .
Life
Franz Xaver von Hornstein was the son of the lawyer Charles von Hornstein and his wife Sophie Thérèse (née Cantin).
He enrolled at the University of Freiburg and studied philosophy and theology . In 1918 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the mystics of the 14th century.
In 1919 he was ordained a priest and became vicar of the Church of St. Joseph in Basel. From 1927 to 1942 he was the first pastor of the then new and the first pure concrete church in Switzerland to be built, Antoniuskirche in Basel. In the early years, the building was mockingly referred to as the soul silo . During this time, from 1937 to 1942, he was also dean of the Basel-Stadt chapter .
In 1942 he was appointed professor of pastoral theology at the University of Freiburg; from 1944 to 1945 he was dean of the theological faculty and from 1960 to 1962 rector of the university.
In 1945 he founded, together with Pius Emmenegger , the magazine Anima (since 1966 as Diakonia ), which sought a stronger link between pastoral theology and psychology , depth psychology and human sciences ; the magazine merged in 1970 with the magazine Der Seelsorger to Diakonia / Der Seelsorger. International magazine for practical theology (1972 name changed to Diakonia . International magazine for the practice of the church ).
Awards and honors
- In 1940 Franz Xaver von Hornstein was awarded the title of Papal Secret Chamberlain .
- In 1957 he was appointed papal house prelate .
