Life

Rudolf von Gottschall, son of a Prussian artillery officer, attended the Herzog-Albrechts-Schule (Rastenburg) . After high school he studied from 1841 at the University of Königsberg law . There he joined the Hochhemia . Because of political agitation relegated , he continued his studies at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Breslau continued. In 1843 he became a member of the Old Breslau fraternity of the Raczeks . He finished his studies at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . With a thesis on the Roman punishment for adultery, he was in Königsberg in 1846 his doctorate .

In 1847 he became a dramaturge at the City Theater in Königsberg . He went to Hamburg in 1848 and to Breslau in 1852 . There he married Marie Freiin v. Seherr-Thoss (from whom there is an exchange of letters with Leopold Schefer ) and went to Posen in 1862 , where he was briefly editor of the Ostdeutsche Zeitung . From 1864 - the year in which he moved to Leipzig - until 1888 Gottschall was the editor of the Blätter für literary entertainment and Our Time (both magazines owned by the FA Brockhaus publishing house ) in Leipzig. 1877 Gottschall was for his services to the German literature of Wilhelm I as King of Prussia ennobled .

Gottschall's progressive work was respected during his lifetime, his dramas were often played. His works were characterized primarily by independent judgment, but also by time-related criticism, which contributed to the fact that he was quickly forgotten after his death.

chess

Gottschall was president of the Augustea Leipzig chess society for many years and, after his resignation, its honorary president. At his suggestion, the German Chess Federation was brought into being on July 18, 1877 . Although he was a chess official and a regular visitor to Augustea , he never played in a single chess tournament. He limited his game to individual games, for example with his friend Adolf Anderssen during his studies in Breslau. Gottschall's son Hermann made a name for himself as a chess player, editor of the German chess newspaper and chess composer .
