Günter Rombold

Günter Rombold (born January 2, 1925 in Stuttgart ; † December 10, 2017 in Linz ) was an Austrian theologian , philosopher , art historian , priest , university professor , art collector and author .

Life

He came in 1941 with his parents to Linz , graduated in 1943 at the School for Boys in Linz , was from 1943 to 1945 a soldier in the army , then studied at the diocesan educational establishment Linz theology and became the 1,949 priests ordained. For several years he worked as a chaplain in the pastoral care of the parish ( Helpfau-Uttendorf , Linz-Stadtpfarre ).

He obtained his doctorate in theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Graz (1954) and that in philosophy and art history at the University of Munich (1958). 1958/59 he taught as a religion professor at the Bundesrealgymnasium Hummelhof , then until 1975 at the Academic Gymnasium Linz .

In 1969 he took on a teaching position and in 1972 he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Catholic-Theological Private University in Linz , where he founded the Institute for Art and Church Construction in 1984, which in 2005 became an institute for art history and philosophy ad instar facultatis in conjunction with the Philosophy Department was assimilated to a faculty. From 1984 to 1986 he was rector of the university. He retired in 1991 as professor for philosophy and in 1995 as professor for art history and aesthetics.

Exhibition and collection

From 1992 to 2003 Rombold was chairman of the Linz Diocesan Art Association. He was also a member of the artists' association MAERZ .

As editor of the journals Christliche Kunstblätter (1958–1970), Kunst und Kirche (1971–1990) and as editor of the journal Kunst und Kirche (1991–1999) he had the opportunity to build bridges between the church and the visual arts and organized exhibitions and artist encounters.

After working on the exhibition Signs of Faith - Spirit of the Avant-Garde in Berlin in 1980, he conceived the exhibition Christ Image in the 20th Century in the New Gallery of the City of Linz in 1981 .

From 1981 to 1996 he headed the jury of the Otto Mauer Prize in Vienna and in 1986 designed the exhibition Otto Mauer Prize Winners at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna .

In 1999 he exhibited the works he had collected under the title Expressionism and Meditation - Rombold Collection in the New Gallery of the City of Linz and then in Český Krumlov , Magdeburg , Passau and Aschaffenburg . In 2002 he handed over his private art collection to the state of Upper Austria.

In 2009 an exhibition was held under the title Expression and Meditation - From the Rombold Collection in the Archbishop's Cathedral and Diocesan Museum in Vienna .
