Fred Van Hove
Fred Van Hove (born February 19, 1937 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian improvisation musician (piano, organ, accordion, voice) and composer.
Live and act
Van Hove studied piano, music theory and harmony at the Belgian Academy of Music and initially experimented with various jazz styles and dance music. With the saxophonist Kris Wanders and the drummer Jan van den Ven, Van Hove took the first steps towards free jazz in the early 1960s. After a first encounter with Peter Brötzmann's trio (at that time with Peter Kowald and Mani Neumeier ), Van Hove played in various larger constellations with Brötzmann, Kowald, Buschi Niebergall and Sven-Åke Johansson in the following years . After recordings with the Brötzmann octet ( Machine Gun , 1968) and Manfred Schoof ( European Echoes , 1969), Han Bennink was probably the most famous combo in Central European free jazz, the Brötzmann / van Hove / Bennink trio. Until the breakup in 1975 this band played together regularly, strengthened by Albert Mangelsdorff for some special occasions .
Van Hove also played as a soloist at festivals of new music and in a duo with saxophonist Cel Overberghe . In 1976 he began to accompany experimental films of the 1920s live with improvised music. As a soloist he began to improvise on the church organ. He continued to work in various line-ups, initially with Steve Lacy , Lol Coxhill , Mangelsdorff and Phil Wachsmann , but also with Vinko Globokar . In his Musica Libera groups since the 1980s, u. a. Paul Rutherford , Radu Malfatti , Günter Sommer , Mark Charig , Hans Reichel , Evan Parker , Barry Guy , Marilyn Crispell , Hannes Bauer , Ivo Vander Borght and Annick Nozati .
Van Hove regularly passes on his research results in the field of improvised music in seminars and workshops; He also composes for various projects and has been working in the Werkgroep Improvisierende Musici , a Belgian working group for the promotion and dissemination of free music, since 1972 .
