Kris Wanders

Kris Wanders (* 1946 ) is a Dutch tenor saxophonist . He was one of the pioneers of European free jazz .

Live and act

Wanders learned to play the flute from the age of seven. At fifteen he turned to the saxophone and played rock 'n' roll , but also bebop . Through the Hungarian trumpeter Charles Hurdak, of whose quartet he belonged, he got to know the sound world of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy . In Rotterdam he played at jam sessions with Willem Breuker . In 1965 Peter Brötzmann brought him to a big band production that he made for Belgian radio; he also played in other groups of Brötzmann. In 1966 and 1967 he was a member of the Globe Unity Orchestra , with which he also performed at the Donaueschinger Musiktage . Then he toured Belgium and France with Stu Martin and Peter Kowald . With Willem van Manen , Fred Van Hove and Han Bennink he wrote theater music and film music for Dutch television. From 1970 he belonged to the quartet of Kees Hazevoet . He also worked with Nicole Van den Plas , Michel Pilz and Radu Malfatti .

Wanders moved to Australia in the late 1970s. He played in Melbourne with Australian improvisers like Adam Simmons ( Embers ), performed at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival with Dave Liebman and in 2005 formed the core of an Australian performance of John Coltrane's Ascension with the Kris Wanders / Andy Sugg Unit . At European concerts his unit included Johannes Bauer , Peter Jacquemyn and Tony Buck . With Joost Buis and Felicity Provan he formed his Urban Street Music Project . In addition to the saxophone, Wanders also plays the Indian Shehnai .
