Arjen Gorter

Arjen Gorter (born January 2, 1948 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch jazz bassist .

Gorter has played the accordion since he was eight, the guitar from the age of twelve and the double bass from the age of 16 . Apart from a few months of classical instruction and several workshops with Theo Loevendie in 1965, he is self-taught . After graduating from Barlaeus Gymnasium , he began to study political science and sociology at the Universiteit van Amsterdam until he decided in 1970 to work professionally as a musician.

Already as a student in 1966 Gorter as part of Willem Breuker's Orkest '66 at the festival in Loosdrecht . Between 1967 and 1970 he was a member of several groups of Gunter Hampel - on the one hand in the jazz rock quartet with John McLaughlin and drummer Laurie Allan , on the other hand in the free ensemble with Breuker, Jeanne Lee , Anthony Braxton and Steve McCall . Freelance double bass player in the first half of the 1970s, among others in groups by Loek Dikker , Boy Edgar , Chris McGregor , John Stevens , Paul Bley , Gato Barbieri , the Globe Unity Orchestra and Peter Brötzmann . Between 1972 and 1975 he was a member of Irène Schweizer's quartet (with Rüdiger Carl and Louis Moholo , among others ), but also worked with Burton Greene , Hans Dulfer , the Instant Composers Pool and with Nedly Elstak . He also belonged to the Theo Loevendie Consort between 1972 and 1985 .

From 1975 until its dissolution in 2012 he was a member of the Willem Breuker Kollektief . He also played with Roswell Rudd , Leo Cuypers , Phil Woods , Sheila Jordan , Soesja Citroen , Suzie Stern, René Thomas , JC Tans , Tobias Delius , Alex Coke , Sean Bergin and Mal Waldron . Since 2000 he played with Craig Handy , Alex Coke, Archie Shepp and James Carter as well as with the project Eric Dolphy 2000 (in which Breuker John Engels and Eric Vloeimans were involved). Together with Tobias Delius, Michael Moore and Martin van Duynhoven he toured in the Frank van Bommel Quintet in Canada. He also took part in joint projects by Arend Niks and Rob Verdurmen and was part of Jorrit Dijkstra's quartet . In recent years he has played regularly in a trio with the pianist Leo Bouwmeester and Alex Coke, but also with I Compani around Bo van de Graaf and Michael Moore Bigtet .

John McLaughlin dedicated the composition Arjen's Bag to Gorter , which he recorded on his album " Extrapolation ".
