Tobias Delius (born July 15, 1964 in Oxford , Great Britain ) is a British jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , clarinet ) who frequently works in the Netherlands .

Live and act

The son of an internationally working scientist got used to international contexts in his youth. He started playing the tenor saxophone as a teenager and made his first playing experience in the jazz scene of the Ruhr area from 1980 . In 1983 and 1984 he lived in Mexico , where he gave concerts in the "Cuarteto Mexicano de Jazz" conducted by Francixco Téllez . He then moved to Amsterdam , where he briefly studied music at the Sweelinck Conservatory and was soon recognized in the BIM-Huis - improvisation scene .

Since 1990 Delius has led his own quartet with Tristan Honsinger , Joe Williamson and Han Bennink , which has recorded three CDs. In 2003 he also put together a sextet with violinist Maartje ten Hoorn , trumpeter Bart Maris , keyboardist Pat Thomas , Joe Williamson and Paul Lovens . He was a member of Available Jelly , the ICP-Orchestra , Sean Bergins MOB, the Trio San Francisco with Bergin and Daniele D'Agaro as well as the quintet of Georg Graewe . He also played with Steve Lacy , Bill Frisell , Louis Moholo , Cor Fuhler , Ray Anderson and in the Moers Festival project by Frank Gratkowski . He also gave concerts at the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2013 with Joe Williamson and Christian Lillinger, among others .

Delius has lived in Berlin since 2007 .

Awards

In 2004 Delius received the prestigious Dutch VPRO / Boy Edgar Prize .
