Aki Takase ( Japanese 高 瀬 ア キ , Takase Aki ; born January 26, 1948 in Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz musician (pianist and composer).

Live and act

Takase started playing the piano at the age of three. She studied classical piano in Japan, then discovered jazz and after her first concerts in Japan (including in Haruki Murakami's jazz club , where she came into contact with American musicians such as Dexter Gordon , Kirk Lightsey etc.), she went to the USA. There she gave concerts from 1978 and made recordings a. a. with Lester Bowie , David Liebman , Sheila Jordan , John Zorn and John Scofield . In addition, from 1978 she belonged to the groups of Yoshio Ikeda , with whom she also made duo recordings.

In 1981 she gave her first European concert at the Jazzfest Berlin and then played at large and well-known festivals.

Takase has lived in Berlin since 1987. She works regularly with her husband Alexander von Schlippenbach , but also with Han Bennink , Evan Parker , Paul Lovens and other free jazz musicians. She discovered the young talent Maria João , with whom she toured around the world. Sometimes their duo was expanded to a trio with bassist Niels Henning Orsted Petersen . She also worked with David Murray , Louis Sclavis , Günther Klatt , Silke Eberhard and Rudi Mahall in a duo, with other musicians such as DJ Illvibe , Eugene Chadbourne and Nils Wogram in a trio or quartet. She briefly worked as a visiting professor at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin , where she a. a. Daniel Erdmann and Julia Hülsmann taught.

In various projects she deals with personalities from the history of jazz in a changing line-up, with Ellington (1990, 2009), Monk (1994), Dolphy (1998, 2014), WC Handy (2002), Fats Waller (2004) and Ornette Coleman ( 2006).

Prizes and awards

Takase was listed eight times in the quarterly lists of the German Record Critics' Prize ; For the CD Aki Takase plays Fats Waller , she was awarded the 2004 German Record Critics' Prize. She was awarded the Berliner Zeitung's Critics ' Prize in 1999 and the SWR Jazz Prize in 2002. In 2018 she was awarded the Berlin Jazz Prize.
