Maria João Monteiro Grancha (born June 27, 1956 in Lisbon , Portugal ) is a Portuguese jazz singer.

life and work

Maria João started out as a swimming instructor and began her training in 1982 at the Lisbon Hot Club school. Already in 1983/4 she appeared with her own bands and in 1985 won a first prize at the festival in San Sebastian. A European tour followed shortly thereafter. Back then the accompanists were Christof Lauer and Bobo Stenson and also Charlie Mariano , David Friedman , Thomas Heidepriem . After working with the Japanese pianist Aki Takase from 1987 onwards, various styles such as world music , modern jazz , but above all Latin American and Brazilian music as well as avant-garde followed in the 1990s . Depending on the thematic direction of the publication, electronic or symphonic elements from other musical styles are also incorporated.

Maria João has played with many first-class musicians, e. B. Manu Katché , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen , Miroslav Vitouš , Lauren Newton , Trilok Gurtu and Kai Eckhardt , but has mostly played with Mário Laginha as a pianist and keyboardist since the early 1990s .
