He studied at the National Conservatory of Music with a focus on piano. Afterwards he was a member of various orchestras and formations before he worked regularly with the singer Mario João since 1983. So far 12 albums have been made together. In addition, he founded the Mário Laginha Trio in 1987 , with which he not only performed but also produced his own albums. He is also regularly on the road as a solo artist. In 1984 he founded the Sextetto de Jazz de Lisboa . Laginha played at countless festivals around the world, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival .

He was also on stage with musicians like Wayne Shorter , Gilberto Gil and Manu Katché and worked with Wolfgang Muthspiel , Trilok Gurtu , Ralph Towner , Dino Saluzzi and Django Bates . He is friends with the well-known Portuguese pianist Pedro Burmester .

His work encompasses many genres of musical culture: in addition to jazz, he has also recorded Brazilian, Indian and African music and pop, rock music and classical music are also part of his repertoire. Frédéric Chopin , Johann Sebastian Bach and the classical composer Bernardo Sassetti , who died in 2012, are among the composers whose works were the starting point for their own improvisations. He also composed for the NDR big band and the hr big band .

Laginha was last seen on television in Germany in January 2019 when he led the project “Fado & more: Cristina Branco” by the Fado singer Cristina Branco . The concerts with the hr big band were recorded on January 17 and 18, 2019 in the hr broadcasting hall in Frankfurt am Main and then broadcast repeatedly on television, around June 25, 2020.
