Peter McEnery

Peter McEnery (* 21st February 1940 in Walsall , Staffordshire , England as Robert Peter McEnery ) is a British actor with character roles in film, television and theater. He played leading roles in international cinema productions in the 1960s and 1970s, including Der Millionenschatz , Donegal, King of the Rebels , The Countess and Her Colonel , Leo, the War Hero and The Cat and the Canary .

life and career

Robert Peter McEnery was born in 1940 to Charles and Ada Mary (nee Brinson) McEnery in Walsall, Staffordshire. Peter McEnery was introduced to the theatrical trade early on under the guidance of Iris Warren. McEnery made his debut through a theater internship in 1958. Two years later, he made his first professional appearance in London. Since that time he has been closely associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company and played many important character roles as an actor on stage, including the title role in Ron Daniel's 1979 production in Pericles, Prince of Tire 1981's Oberon in the BBC Television's Shakespeare production of A. Midsummer Night's Dream or 1982 in the production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby .

McEnery's acting career on television began in the late 1950s with smaller roles in British television series such as ITV Television Playhouse , ITV Play of the Week , International Detective and Armchair Theater . He was best known on television in the mid-1970s with his dramatic roles as Edwin Clayhanger in the series Clayhanger, which he embodied in 22 episodes, and in 1979 in the English adventure series The Aphrodite Inheritance when he played David Collier in 8 episodes. In 1986 he was seen as land surveyor Harry Caines in 10 episodes of the TV series The Collectors .

His screen career began in 1960 in Ronald Neame's military drama Once a Hero . In the early 1960s he signed a contract with the Walt Disney Company and soon played leading roles in films such as The Millionaire next to Hayley Mills and in 1966 as a freedom fighter in Michael O'Herlihy's adventure film Donegal, King of the Rebels . After his time at Disney he was seen in international productions such as Roger Vadim's Die Beute at the side of Jane Fonda and Michel Piccoli , in Robert Hossein's historical drama I Killed Rasputin alongside Gert Fröbe or in Duccio Tessari's comedy Dear a young widow .

In 1970 he reached the peak of his cinema career with leading roles in Jerzy Skolimowski's adventure film The Countess and Her Colonel as partner of Claudia Cardinale , with the title role in Douglas Hickox's comedy Be Kind to Mr. Sloane , based on the play by the playwright Joe Orton or with Marcel Camus Anti-war film Leo, the war hero alongside comedian Bourvil .

In the 1970s he was only seen sporadically in movies, such as in Freddie Francis' high-profile horror comedy Stories That Lead to Insanity, in 1973 in a group of actors such as Kim Novak , Joan Collins or Jack Hawkins , in the mystery thriller Traces on the Moon in 1975 by Director Luigi Bazzoni at the side of Florinda Bolkan or in 1978 in Radley Metzger's horror comedy The Cat and the Canary . In the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, Peter McEnery preferred roles in the theater or on television.

Since the late 1950s, he has appeared in more than 40 roles in international film and television productions.

Peter McEnery's first wife was actress Julie Peasgood. His daughter Kate McEnery also took up this profession. His younger brother was actor John McEnery , who died in 2019 .
