Douglas Hickox

Douglas Hickox (born January 10, 1929 in London , † July 25, 1988 there ) was a British film director .

He began his career as an assistant director and second unit director in the 1950s. He made his first own feature film in 1963.

He was married to Oscar- winning film editor Anne V. Coates . They had three children together. The sons Anthony Hickox and James DR Hickox are directors. The daughter Emma E. Hickox is active as an editor. Because of his son Anthony, who was a big fan of horror stories even as a child, Douglas Hickox made the horror film Theater des Horens in 1973 , although his father Douglas Hickox detested this genre.

In his honor, the Douglas Hickox Award for the best debut film by a director has been presented annually since 1998 at the British Independent Film Awards .
