life and work
Claudia Cardinales mother was a descendant of Sicilian emigrants, her father also came from Sicily. Her mother tongue is Sicilian ; She only learned Italian as a teenager. She learned Tunisian Arabic and French , the predominant languages in Tunisia, at an early age .
In 1957 she won a beauty contest ("The Most Beautiful Italian Girl") in Tunis . The prize, a trip to the Venice Film Festival , should change your life completely. She moved to Rome and began studying at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia . In the same year she was discovered by the Italian film producer Franco Cristaldi .
She made her screen debut in the film Goha (1958) opposite Omar Sharif . She played other minor roles (including in Wind des Südens , Fiasco in Milan ) until her breakthrough in 1960 with Bel Antonio and 1962 with Senilità . Especially in the 1960s Cardinale was one of the leading international stars; next to Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida , she was considered another outstanding Italian film diva.
In 1960 she cast Luchino Visconti in a supporting role in the classic social drama Rocco and his brothers . In the adventure film Cartouche, the Bandit (1962) she played the lover of the titular hero Jean-Paul Belmondo . In 1963, she appeared in several great film classics, in Eight and a Half , a study of society (by Federico Fellini ), in the large-scale historical epic The Leopard of Visconti and in the successful crime comedy The Pink Panther , directed by Blake Edwards .
In 1964 she achieved international success with the role of Toni Alfredo in the American film Circus World . Based on the abbreviation BB for the French sex symbol Brigitte Bardot , she was called CC in the media from then on . From then on, she played almost exclusively leading roles, including in Sergio Leone 's epic western classic Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod in 1968 , which was an outstanding box-office success, especially in France and Germany.
Although Claudia Cardinale continued to work regularly as a film actress, she was unable to build on her great successes from the 1970s. In 1971 she starred in the spaghetti western comedy Petroleummiezen at the side of the Bardot. She also tried her hand at being a singer and recorded a few singles. Her disco recordings Love Affair (1977) and Sun ... I Love You (1978), which were also released in Germany, attracted attention .
In 1981 she played the mistress of the eccentric title hero ( Klaus Kinski ) in Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo .
At the Berlinale 2002 Claudia Cardinale received the Golden Bear for her life's work.
She was married to the Italian film producer Franco Cristaldi from 1966 to 1975 . From 1975 to 1999 she lived with the director and film producer Pasquale Squitieri , who was known for his spaghetti westerns and his socially critical films; her daughter Claudia comes from this connection.
Her son Patrick (formerly Patrizio), today a jewelry designer in New York, comes from a premarital relationship of the then 18-year-olds in Tunis; According to her own accounts, it was rape.
In 2005 she published her memoir under the title Mes étoiles (German: "Meine Sterne", 2006).
In 2017 Claudia Cardinale was featured on the official poster of the 70th Cannes International Film Festival . In 2018, a picture from her early years adorned a poster for the Filmpodium Zurich, which dedicated a film series to her.
