The girl and the artist (original title: El artista y la modelo ) is a Spanish-French feature film from 2012 . Directed by Fernando Trueba . Fernando Trueba and Jean-Claude Carrière wrote the script .
action
The film is set in the summer of 1943 in a small town in southern France, near the Spanish border. The young Catalan woman Mercè slept in front of the church portal and washes herself at the public fountain. She is being watched by Léa, wife of the old sculptor Marc Cros. On the spur of the moment, Léa takes the homeless woman home with her and learns from Mercè that she has fled a prison camp run by the Franco regime. The sculptor offers her to live in his hut on top of the mountain, which he uses as a studio, and to model for him. After initial hesitation, Mercè agrees.
In this hut and in the open nature of the surrounding area, we watch the artist at work, feel his tension in the search for the sparkling idea that should give his sculpture life and expressiveness, as well as the effort of Mercè, who finds it difficult To remain in the same pose for hours.
During a foray through the forest, Mercè meets the resistance fighter Pierre. He is in the process of burying an American who jumped off a plane to join the French resistance but was killed by the Germans. Since Pierre is wounded, Mercè hides him in the hut. When Marc Cros discovers the stranger, he initially reacts angrily, on the one hand because of the danger that Pierre will be tracked down by the Germans, but also because the sculptor feels disturbed in his work. Shortly afterwards a jeep pulls up from which a German officer and his driver get out. To everyone's relief, the German officer turns out to be an art lover who is working on a book about Marc Cros, is greeted by him in a friendly manner and addressed by his first name “Werner”.
The sculptor wonders about Mercès' scratched legs. She tells him that she knows her way around the mountains and that she brings refugees across the Spanish border in the rough terrain at night. When Pierre's wound has healed, Mercè informs the artist that she is taking Pierre to the Spanish border the following night, but will come back as soon as possible to continue to model him.
After many preliminary studies, Marc Cros succeeds in completing his last work, the sculpture of a female nude. He gave Mercè his bicycle and she went to Marseille with a letter of recommendation from the sculptor, perhaps to work as a model for another artist.
background
The girl and the artist takes place during the Second World War , when large parts of France were occupied by German troops. General Francisco Franco ruled Spain after winning the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).
The film was shot exclusively in black and white and almost entirely without music. The last section from the Adagio of the 9th Symphony by Gustav Mahler is only heard during the credits . The theatrical release in Germany was on December 25, 2013.
Director Fernando Trueba dedicated the film, as noted in the opening credits, to his brother, the sculptor Máximo Trueba (1953–1996), and his friend, the sound engineer Pierre Gamet (1944–2012).
Reviews
"The staging tries hard to avoid the clichés inherent in the subject, but loses sight of all dynamism and freezes in sedate blandness and solid views of beauty and nature."
“After Chico & Rita , his colorful cartoon for adults, this time the Spanish director Fernando Trueba plunged into the universe of an aging artist and his search for perfection, inspiration, beauty and the meaning of life with sophisticated black and white pictures. Even if not much happens in this drama, every shot is a pleasure! "
