Fernando Trueba (born January 18, 1955 in Madrid ) is a Spanish film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Trueba began his film work as a film critic. He had his first major success as a director in 1980 with the film Opera prima . He celebrated his greatest international success with the film Belle Epoque , which received numerous national and international awards in 1993, including the Oscar for the best foreign language film. The film was just as much an international breakthrough for the actress Penélope Cruz as it was for Trueba as a director. Trueba won the Goya for best director three times .

Fernando Trueba is married to the film producer Christina Huete. He is the brother of the writer, actor, screenwriter, director and film producer David Trueba . Fernando Trueba's son with Christina Huete, Jonás Trueba , born in 1981 , also works as a director and screenwriter.
