Cannes International Film Festival 2017
The 70th Cannes International Film Festival took place from May 17-28, 2017. For the fourth time, they were under the direction of President Pierre Lescure , while Thierry Frémaux, as General Delegate, was responsible for the artistic direction.
This year, the jury president of the international competition, in which the Palme d'Or for the best film at the festival is awarded, was the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar . The main prize was awarded to the satirical drama The Square by Sweden's Ruben Östlund .
The non-competitive French feature film Les Fantômes d'Ismaël by Arnaud Desplechin was selected as the opening film . The moderator of the opening ceremony and the final award gala was the Italian actress Monica Bellucci , who was a jury member in 2016 .
The official program, including the film entries for the international competition for the Golden Palm, was presented on April 13, 2017 and additional films were added on April 27, 2017. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary, the trophy was set with 167 small diamonds that lay “like star dust” over the golden palm leaf.

The festival poster was inspired by a press photo from 1959, which shows the Italian actress Claudia Cardinale dancing over the rooftops of Rome . The photographer is not known by name. The fact that the photo was subsequently retouched to make Cardinale appear slimmer caused criticism on the Internet and on social media . The actress herself later described the scandal as a “false controversy”: “I have nothing against the artistic processing of the picture. It's a poster that, next to me, depicts a dance, a flight. This image has been retouched to emphasize the effect of grace and turn me into a dream; it's sublimation . There is no need to worry about realism here, and as a staunch feminist I don't see any disrespect for women. There are more important things in the world that should be discussed. Let's not forget that it's just cinema! ”Said Cardinale.

Pedro Almodóvar was presented at the end of January 2017 as the successor to last year's jury president George Miller . He is considered the world's best-known Spanish filmmaker of his generation, with 20 directorial roles in feature films since the 1980s. His films are characterized by a "consistent and idiosyncratic filmic style mix of shrill, weird or kitschy elements, an unrestrained quote style and surrealistic ideas as well as extravagant costumes and an unusual design of the ambience" and made, among others, Antonio Banderas , Javier Bardem , Carmen Maura , Victoria Abril and Penélope Cruz ( Actor Award in Cannes 2006 for Almodóvar's Volver - Return ) to stars. The specialist critics praised Almodóvar as the heir to Luis Buñuel and as the pillar saint of European auteur cinema , as a radical, relentless artist with quirks. “My ideal story is a woman who is in crisis,” says the filmmaker.
Almodóvar competed five times in the Golden Palm competition between 1999 and 2016 and received the Director's Award for Everything About My Mother in 1999 and the Screenplay Award for Volver - Returning in 2006 . In 2004 he opened the film festival with La mala educación - Bad education out of competition and in 1992 was already a member of the jury under Gérard Depardieu . Almodóvar also graced the official festival poster for the 60th edition of the Cannes Festival, together with other filmmakers.
The jury president was assisted by several jury members who were announced on April 25, 2017:
- Maren Ade , German director, screenwriter and film producer (participant in the 2016 competition )

An overview of the 19 feature films competing for the Palme d'Or (who later was awarded the grand prize contribution The Square by Ruben Östlund was re-nominated):
After rumors arose shortly before the start of the film festival that the competition entries The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) by Noah Baumbach and Okja by Bong Joon-ho , which were mainly financed by the video-on-demand provider Netflix , were not participating due to a lack of theatrical releases in France could be excluded, the festival management published a correction on its website on May 10, 2017. Both films took part in the festival, even if there was no agreement with Netflix about a theatrical release in France. The point of contention was the strict exploitation rules in France, which stipulate that a cinema film may only be made available as a stream three years later. In addition, as of 2018, the management issued a new rule stating that future competition entries must have a French theatrical distributor. At the press conference to introduce the international jury, Pedro Almódovar read out a protest note in which he supported the attitude of the festival management.
