The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is India's premier film and television school.

history

It was founded in Pune in 1960 on the former studio site of the Prabhat Film Company, which closed in 1953, as the Film Institute of India . She has been self-employed since 1974 and is funded by the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting . At the same time, television training was included at the instigation of the state television broadcaster Doordarshan . The FTII is a member of the international film academy association CILECT .

Education

The film school offers three-year diploma courses in directing, film editing, camera and sound. There are also two-year courses in acting, production design and animation, as well as one-year courses in scriptwriting, video editing and other directions.

The director Ritwik Ghatak was a professor and vice director of the university in 1966/67. His students included the directors Mani Kaul , Kumar Shahani and Adoor Gopalakrishnan as well as the cameraman KK Mahajan, important representatives of the movement of artistically oriented filmmakers that became known in the 1970s as the New Indian Cinema .

Graduates also include directors Shaji N. Karun , Vidhu Vinod Chopra , Subhash Ghai , Mahesh Bhatt , Sanjay Leela Bhansali , Santosh Sivan, and Vimukthi Jayasundara ; the actors Smita Patil , Shabana Azmi , Naseeruddin Shah , Om Puri and Kulbhushan Kharbanda and the film editor Renu Saluja .

The FTII produced two feature films: Mahesh Kauls Raakhi Raakhi (1969) and Vishram Bedekars Jai Jawan Jai Makan (1971).
