Smita Patil

Smita Patil ( Marathi : स्मिता पाटील , Smitā Pāṭīl ; born October 17, 1955 in Pune , † December 13, 1986 in Mumbai ) was an Indian film actress. Like her colleagues Naseeruddin Shah , Om Puri and Shabana Azmi, she is one of the leading actors in the New Indian Film of the 1970s, which is committed to realism .

Life

Smita Patil was born the daughter of a minister in the Maharashtra government . She studied literature at the University of Bombay and also worked on television. In 1974 she had her first role in a feature film. She had her breakthrough under the direction of Shyam Benegal . The socially critical film Manthan (1976) made Smita Patil internationally known. Her acting performances in Bhumika (1976) with Amol Palekar , Chakra (1980) and Mirch Masala (1986), both with Naseeruddin Shah, are outstanding and clearly testify to her leading role in Indian parallel cinema.

For Chakra she received her second National Film Award for Best Actress in 1981 and also the Filmfare Award / Best Actress . She played a woman who had to move to a slum area in Mumbai with her son after her husband was sentenced to death. Life there is characterized by violence, crime and drugs. There is no way out of poverty, she ends up going to prison herself. Patil broke Indian film conventions by shooting an open bath scene in Chakra , intense love scenes in Aakrosh (1980) with Om Puri, and a kissing scene in Arth (1982) with Kulbhushan Kharbanda .

She was also present in regional film production; under the Bengali director Mrinal Sen , she became popular in Akaler Sandhaney (1980) and she worked with Satyajit Ray in his television film Sadgati (1981), in Ketan Mehta's highly acclaimed directorial debut Bhavni Bhavai (1980) she appeared in the Gujarati film.

Patil has also appeared in Bollywood commercial entertainment films , such as Amitabh Bachchan in Ramesh Sippy's Shakti (1982). In these, however, she seemed downright out of place, as there is little to do as an actor. In the mid-1980s she performed several times with Rajesh Khanna .

Smita Patil - always playing self-confident women in her roles - was involved in the Indian women's movement; she ran a feminist women's center in Mumbai. She died of complications shortly after giving birth to their son with Raj Babbar .
