Rajesh Khanna

Rajesh Khanna ( Hindi राजेश खन्ना Rājeś Khannā ; born December 29, 1942 in Amritsar , † July 18, 2012 in Mumbai ; real name: Jatin Khanna ) was an Indian actor of Hindi films .

Life

Rajesh Khanna began his film career in 1966 with low-cost productions in Bollywood . His roles were adapted to the social reality of India in the 1960s and 1970s and his image as a young hero and heartthrob made him the ideal cast for rebellious petty criminals from lower social backgrounds and people in dire need. Khanna became the most popular performer at times. With the films Andaz , Anand and Amar Prem (all 1971) he ousted the former superstar and box office magnet Shammi Kapoor for good. After 1974 he was replaced in this position by Amitabh Bachchan .

Khanna made frequent appearances as a partner of Sharmila Tagore and was one of the great stars of Hindi film of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He starred in about 160 films. In 2005 he received the Filmfare Award in the Lifetime Achievement category. He was also a three-time winner in the Best Actor category .

Since the 1990s, however, Rajesh Khanna has hardly been seen in films, because he was politically active in the Congress Party and was a member of the Indian Parliament for one legislative period .

Khanna was married to actress Dimple Kapadia ; his daughters Rinke and Twinkle Khanna are also employed in Bollywood. His son-in-law is the actor Akshay Kumar .
