Sharmila Tagore (2011)

Sharmila Tagore ( Bengali : শর্মিলা ঠাকুর , Śarmilā Ṭhākur ; born December 8, 1944 or 1946 in Hyderabad ) is an Indian film actress .

Life

Her first film appearances were in films by Satyajit Ray . When she was just 14, she played the young wife of the protagonist Apu in Apur Sansar (1959), played by Soumitra Chatterjee . Together with Chatterjee, she appeared as a couple in several films. In Ray 's film Devi , which is critical of Hinduism , she again played a newlywed woman next to Chatterjee, who is believed by her father-in-law (played by Chhabi Biswas ) to be an incarnation of the goddess Kali and is then declared to be. While she at first involuntarily accepts her "new role", she slowly loses her understanding and sense of reality and, like the neighborhood guided by her superstition, ultimately believes in her divinity herself. With her fragile appearance, Tagore played this role convincingly. Satyajit Ray's regular cameraman Subrata Mitra preferred to film Tagore slightly from above, which enhanced her mysterious smile and facial features and gave her the reputation of an unapproachable sex symbol. She was therefore thought to be a bit snooty and arrogant. She made three other films with Satyajit Ray, of which Nayak (1966, with Uttam Kumar ), Aranyer Din Ratri (1970, with Soumitra Chatterjee) and Seemabaddha (1971).

Her Bollywood career began in 1964 in the musical Kashmir Ki Kali with Shammi Kapoor . In 1966 she took on the title role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Anupama and appeared in her typical flirtatious and glamorous style. This made it a fashion trendsetter in India towards the end of the 1960s. Her hairstyle, clothes and make-up were copied by courageous contemporaries. Wearing only a bikini on the cover of a magazine, she caused controversy in 1966 over her persistently "inappropriate" clothing. To the disappointment of her male fans, she married cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi ( Nawab of Pataudi ) in 1968 , converted to Islam and took the name Ayesha Sultana. Contrary to expectations, her acting career did not end. In 1969 she played alongside Rajesh Khanna in Aradhana in a completely unglamorous role as a mother and received the Filmfare Award for best actress for her performance . She was then often cast as a film couple with Khanna. After the successful film Mausam (1975) she played several times with Sanjeev Kumar . Also frequent, but less successful, were her appearances with Shashi Kapoor , Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan . She lives in Delhi and is occasionally seen in films, elegant as always.

Two of her children, Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan , are also film actors. Sharmila Tagore received the Filmfare Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997. In 2009 she was appointed to the competition jury of the 62nd Cannes International Film Festival .
